Why You Need an Event Stream Registry

« Kafka Summit London 2023

Event-driven systems can be challenging to manage due to their complexity and decentralised nature. These systems are made up of numerous independent components developed by different teams that must function together seamlessly. Governance of event streams is often decentralised, which can make it difficult to impose system-wide constraints and maintain a comprehensive view of the system. Furthermore, a lack of familiarity with event streaming technologies can hinder development and increase the likelihood of errors.

During this presentation, we will delve into the ways in which Event Stream Registry, a dataset that outlines the intended state of an event-driven system, can tackle these common challenges. By defining the system state as data and utilising specialised tools to build our system, we can lower the technical burden on teams, streamline auditing of the system, easily implement system-wide constraints, and create an abstraction layer for underlying technologies.

Additionally, we will demonstrate how the Event Stream Registry has been leveraged to create an observable, discoverable, and traceable data lineage tool.
