Welcome to the microservices era. Application architecture is shifting from monolithic systems to flexible, scalable, event-driven approaches.

Microservices separate monolithic systems into a collection of independent, self-contained services that allow easier deployment, testing, and maintenance. Microservices bring a lot of benefits—most importantly, a flexible and scalable development model that keeps up with modern business requirements.

Because microservices are distributed systems, challenges include an increased dependency on automation and DevOps practices and limited options to address inevitable failures.

Adding event streams lets you decouple different bounded contexts, resulting in a more scalable solution with fewer failure modes. This allows different teams to evolve and change with less risk of affecting one another. But doing this well requires a new set of tools and infrastructure—which is what we’ll discuss in this series dedicated to microservices and Apache Kafka, the most popular tool used to build event-driven microservices architectures.

In this series, you’ll explore:

  • What are microservices, and how do they work?
  • The pros and cons of microservices architectures
  • Why Kafka is used in microservices

This three-part series introduces key concepts, use cases, and best practices for finding success with event-driven microservices. Each session is recorded, so you can access the series on-demand. Sign up today!
